Belen storms to win over Varela in final minute

The Wolverines (5-2, 3-0) scored two touchdowns in final minute of play for a 34-24 comeback District 15-8A victory over the Vipers (3-4, 1-2) Friday night at Tropical Park.

Down 24-20 with 40 seconds to play, Daniel Hernandez connected with 6-5 receiver Frank Battle to put Belen up. On the following drive, Varela quarterback Justin Vargas was intercepted by Ariel Jimenez who returned the pass 30 yards for a touchdown.

Varela gained the lead on back-to-back touchdown runs by Vargas, the second coming with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter and put the Vipers up 24-20.

Pedro Garcia led Belen with 92 rushing yards on 16 carries and a touchdown.
