Calm winds canceled nearly all opening races of the 2014 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta on Saturday on Biscayne Bay. Only the “green” or beginner fleet of the Optimist class managed a single race. The rest of the Opti fleet, along with Laser, Laser Radial, Laser 4.2 and Club 420 classes, left the bay without racing. Competition resumes Sunday, wind permitting. More than 675 racers from the United States and around the world are competing in the four-day event, which concludes Tuesday at Miami’s Coral Reef Yacht Club.
▪ The Florida Park Service is providing residents and visitors with an early incentive to accomplish New Year’s resolutions — the “First Day Hike” on Jan.1. Some 30 state parks will offer guided hikes on New Year’s Day as part of a national initiative to get people outdoors and improve their health. The only South Florida event will be at Bahia Honda State Park, 36850 Overseas Highway, Big Pine Key, at 10a.m. For more information, call 305-872-2353.
