Matthew Tkachuk set to make Panthers season debut after long injury recovery
Matthew Tkachuk is back.
The Florida Panthers’ star winger is poised to return to the lineup and make his season debut Monday against the San Jose Sharks at Amerant Bank Arena.
“I told them to throw me in the fire,” Tkachuk told reporters after morning skate Monday. “I’m not coming back just to dip my toes in the water.”
It’s a long time coming. Tkachuk missed the Panthers’ first 47 games of the season while recovering from August surgery to repair a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia he sustained last February during the 4 Nations Face-Off and played through during the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs to help Florida repeat as champions.
The All-Star winger’s presence has been sorely missed. In addition to everything he does on the ice — from being a point producer offensively to agitating the opponents — he’s one of Florida’s vocal leaders in the dressing room, a spark plug whose brash, unflapping persona is easy to motivate a team.
Based on line rushes at morning skate Monday, Tkachuk is set to play right wing on Florida’s third forward line alongside left wing Mackie Samoskevich and center Evan Rodrigues.
It’s a needed boost for the Panthers, who have seen so many stars sidelined by injuries throughout the season. In addition to Tkachuk, captain and top-line center Aleksander Barkov has yet to play this season after undergoing surgery to repair the ACL and MCL in his right knee after sustaining an injury in his first day of on-ice work during training camp. Fourth-line center Tomas Nosek (knee) also hasn’t played this season.
Meanwhile, veteran winger Brad Marchand is slated to miss his seventh consecutive game with an undisclosed injury. Defensemen Dmitry Kulikov (shoulder) and Seth Jones (upper body) plus fourth-line forward Jonah Gadjovich (upper body) are also currently out.
