Brad Marchand continues to prove that age is just a number.

And that he’s really, really good in the Stanley Cup Final.

With his two goals in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, a 5-2 Florida Panthers win over against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, Marchand now has six goals in the series — the first player to hit a half-dozen in a Stanley Cup Final series since Esa Tikkanen in 1988.

Marchand, at 37 years old, has now logged at least a handful of goals in a Cup Final series for the second time in his career after also doing it in the 2011 Cup Final with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins won that series in seven games.

What would the Brad Marchand of 14 years ago say to the Brad Marchand of today?

“Man, that guy’s good looking. That’d probably be it,” the Marchand of today said. “It’s just how it plays sometimes. Sometimes you get bounces, sometimes you don’t. But definitely be grateful to be in this opportunity and have another opportunity to be in the finals and be part of a really good team, for sure.”

He is the seventh player to score at least five goals in multiple Stanley Cup Final series and the first since Mario Lemieux in 1991 and 1992.

Of those seven, however, Marchand is the only one to do it for multiple teams.

Both of Lemieux did both with Pittsburgh. The others: Jean Beliveau for the Montreal Canadiens (1956 and 1965), Bernie Geoffrion for Montreal (1955 and 1958), Maurice Richard for Montreal (1944 and 1951), Jack Darragh for the Ottawa Senators (1920 and 1921) and Frank Foyston for the Seattle Metropolitans (1919 and 1920).

His 13 career Stanley Cup Final goals are the most among active skaters and are 17th in NHL history.

“That’s just him,” center Anton Lundell said. “He just has that passion, which you see today. He decided he wanted to go there and be the difference maker, and he did that. Unbelievable player and we’re all pretty amazed by him.

Marchand opened scoring 9:12 into regulation after Lundell won a faceoff at center ice. He drove between Oilers defensemen Mattias Ekholm and Darnell Nurse before sending a wrist shot from the slot past Edmonton goaltender Calvin Pickard, who started in place of Stuart Skinner.

His second goal was even more spectacular. He pushed the Panthers’ lead to 3-0 5:12 into the third period when he took an Eetu Luostarinen pass in the neutral zone, drove past Oilers defenseman Jake Walman and sent a backhanded shot past Pickard.

“They’re both unbelievable,” Panthers center Sam Bennett said, “but that second one, I don’t know how he did that. We’re gonna have to watch that clip a couple times and ask him to teach me something.”
