Kanye West reportedly wants to host a gospel concert in Miami around Super Bowl 54
Add a Kanye West concert to the growing list of Super Bowl activities.
First reported by NBC 6’s Julia Bagg, the “Jesus Walks” artist has spoken to Super Bowl Host Committee Chair Rodney Barreto about holding “a gospel concert in connection to the big game.” In a text message to the Herald, Barreto said the two had a preliminary conversation but have not yet reached an agreement.
Assuming West doesn’t have anything special planned (which is never a safe bet), the “gospel concert” would most likely refer to the Sunday Services that he’s held across the country. The performances, which feature gospel remixes of secular tunes as well as original songs, started as invite-only concerts in January 2019. They’ve since expanded into the public sphere, with shows at Coachella and Howard University.
While the details are scant, the concert would be the second time since December that West has performed in South Florida. The 42-year-old debuted his new opera “Mary” during Art Basel.
West, who has frequently explored religion in his music, released his first Christian-themed project, “JESUS IS KING,” in late October. Two months later, the Sunday Service Choir, which accompanies him during the Sunday Service showcases, dropped its first album, “Jesus Is Born,” on Christmas Day.
Miami Herald staff writer Barry Jackson helped contribute to this report.
