See Kanye West dressed head to toe in silver for his opera during Art Basel
Kanye West managed to take a little attention off the Art Basel banana fiasco over the weekend.
The rapper debuted his new “Mary” opera on Sunday afternoon at the long abandoned Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key. The show of sorts was a re-enactment of the Christmas nativity with a Yeezy spin.
The cast, including the 42 year old hip-hop star, was covered head to toe in some sort of silver paint or makeup. Even the baby Jesus was wrapped in a metallic blanket. Awww.
Kim Kardashian’s eccentric hubby ended up looking like the Tin Man met the Nickelodeon Slime machine. But it’s for art, so that’s OK.
As he is wont to do, West quietly announced the “Mary” news via a Tweet last Thursday that read, “And the angel said unto her, fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.” Um, that’s a Bible passage, folks.
This is the “Jesus Walks” singer’s second foray into opera: His “Nebuchadnezzar,” named after the king of ancient Babylon, debuted in Los Angeles last month and also featured performers from his Sunday Service gospel group.
The UK’s “Guardian” called that one a “giant folly,” but the AP said it was “impressive in scope.”
There was no silver paint involved, however.
According to Pitchfork.com, “Mary,” which included some of his older songs such as “Devil in a New Dress,” “Power“ and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” was performed on a floating barge while people watched on from the bleachers. After about an hour, the show was over, and the whole operation left by boat.
The director was the same: Performance artist Vanessa Beecroft, who was the art director on West’s bizarre “Runaway” video back in 2010.
It involved models dressed as chickens, soldiers, ballerinas, a few farm animals and explosions.
So, maybe she’s to blame.
Want to see “Mary?” You have to subscribe to Tidal, or wait for West to cryptically Tweet when and where it will pop up next.
