It’s an interesting time in the South Florida football world. The Miami Hurricanes are looking like College Football Playoff contenders in Year 4 under Mario Cristobal and the Miami Dolphins are trying to find a way to get back into relevance in Year 4 under Mike McDaniel.

Come meet the Miami Herald writers who will be covering the news all season.

Columnists Omar Kelly and Greg Cote, Dolphins beat writer C. Isaiah Smalls II and Hurricanes beat writer Jordan McPherson will discuss the state of the two teams on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dolphin Mall’s Sports and Social in Miami (11401 NW 12th St). The event is free, and will include a question-and-answer portion as well as a meet and greet. You can RSVP here.

Cote has been covering the South Florida sports scene since the 1980s. He has been a sports columnist at the Herald since 1995. Cote also hosts The Greg Cote Show podcast and appears regularly on The Dan Le Batard Show With Stugotz.

Kelly joined the Miami Herald staff in April 2024 as its Dolphins columnist. He has been covering the Dolphins for nearly two decades and been in the South Florida sports market for more than 25 years. Kelly also hosts the Herald’s Dolphins In Depth podcast.

Smalls is in his second season covering the Dolphins. In his previous capacity at the Miami Herald, he was the race and culture reporter who created The 44 Percent, a newsletter dedicated to the Black men who voted to incorporate the city of Miami. A graduate of both Morehouse College and Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Smalls previously worked for ESPN’s Andscape.

McPherson is in his second season covering the Hurricanes and eighth year at the Miami Herald. He also covers the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers and previously spent six seasons covering the Miami Marlins. He attended the University of Florida and covered the Gators athletic program for five years before joining the Herald staff in December 2017.
