Dolphins search for new starters in secondary at training camp. Day 7 highlights

Live updates on the Dolphins’ training camp practice on Wednesday in Miami Gardens (please keep checking back, with the latest posted at the top):

With the news that cornerback Kader Kohou suffered a season-ending knee injury on Saturday, how the rest of the secondary responds will be key.

10:30 a.m. - Red zone scrimmage. First team: TE Pharoah Brown with five yard catch and trucked somebody. Tailback De’Von Achane had a run for a short gain. Incomplete to receiver Malik Washington in the back right corner of the end zone.

Second team: Zach Wilson and Jaylen Wright fumbled the hand. Wright with a touchdown run. Grayson Murphy sacked Wilson.

10:20 a.m. - More scrimmages.

First team: Tailback De’Von Achane with a short gain. Cornerback Cornell Armstrong blitzed and would’ve gotten the sack. Receiver Jaylen Waddle caught a hitch and took it 15 yards.

Second team: Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. sacks Zach Wilson. Tanner Conner with a short catch-and-run. Dee Eskridge with the long touchdown grab over cornerback Jack Jones and safety Jordan Colbert.

Third team: Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. sacks Quinn Ewers. Tight end Julian five-yard catch before being stopped by cornerback Cam Smith.

10:17 a.m. - Special teams. Ryan Stonehouse’s punts have been more consistent than that of Jake Bailey.

10:09 a.m. - Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is in attendance.

9:48 a.m. - First scrimmage period.

First team: Jaylen Waddle had a 15-yard grab in traffic with cornerback Storm Duck as the closest person in coverage. Julian Hill dropped a flat route. Tailback De’Von Achane with a six yard run up the gut behind guard James Daniels but linebacker Tyrel Dodson made the stop. Achane with a four-yard run for the first down stopped by defensive tackle Kenneth Grant. Tackle Jaylen Wright with an eight-yard run off of a pitch to the right.

2nd team: Wright dumped in the backfield by linebackers KJ Britt and Willie Gay Jr. Tailback Alexander Mattison with a 15-yard run.

3rd Team: Mattison stopped at line of scrimmage. Tailback Ollie Gordon II with a two-yard run up the middle.

1st Team: Receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine with a 7-yard grab. Waddle took a screen 25 yards. Tight end Tanner Conner with a five-yard grab. Westbrook-Ikhine had a 15-yard snag with cornerback Cornell Armstrong in coverage.

2nd Team: Defensive tackle Matt Dickerson with a sack on quarterback Zach Wilson. Edge rusher Mo Kamara held by offensive lineman Larry Borom. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. had a pass break up.

3rd Team: Receiver Theo Wease Jr. with the drop. Sack by edge rusher Grayson Murphy and linebacker Channing Tindall.

9:35 a.m. - One-on-one time. First up, offensive linemen vs. defensive linemen. Tackle Patrick Paul won every snap, dominating everyone, including edge rusher Bradley Chubb twice. Borom did better than yesterday, when he was extremely lackluster. Jaelan Phillips won majority of his reps — except one against guard James Daniels. Tackle Jackson Carman was hot and cold. Tackle Matt Dickerson won every rep.

Now receivers vs. corners. Receiver AJ Henning just routed up cornerback Cornell Armstrong. Cornerback Ethan Bonner had a nice punch out. Receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine dropped a comeback. Receiver Jaylen Waddle with a smooth slant-and-go on Bonner that would’ve ended with a touchdown. Receiver Andrew Armstrong with a pair of nice grabs with Jack Jones in defense.

9:20 a.m. - Cornerback Cam Smith has a compression sleeve on his right leg.

9:10 a.m. - Wide receiver Tyreek Hill is excused from Wednesday’s practice due to personal reasons. Other absences include tight end Jalin Conyers, center Aaron Brewer, safety Ashtyn Davis, tackle Bayron Matos, offensive lineman Obinna Eze, linebacker Dequan Jackson, cornerback Kendall Sheffield, safety Ashtyn Davis, safety Dante Trader Jr., cornerback BJ Adams and Kohou.

9:07 a.m. - Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle received the orange jersey for his performance in Tuesday’s practice.
