Dolphins safety leaves practice, returns in a walking boot. Day 6 highlights
Live updates on the Dolphins’ training camp practice on Tuesday in Miami Gardens (please keep checking back, with the latest posted at the top):
The Dolphins lost safety Ashtyn Davis to what appeared to be a significant injury on Tuesday.
The sixth-year veteran walked off the field with a severe limp, barely able to put pressure on his left foot. Several teammates, including Tua Tagovailoa, came over to comfort him. The team brought out the cart, but a severely hobbled Davis walked off on his own. It appeared to be a non-contact injury.
Davis later came back outside on crutches with a boot on his left foot.
The Dolphins already are without safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, who is working his way back from an undisclosed injury that isn’t considered long-term.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, Melifonwu and Davis are considered the Dolphins’ top three safeties, with Elijah Campbell also in the mix for playing time, and Patrick McMorris and Dante Trader Jr. competing. Trader hasn’t practiced since late last week and is expected to miss at least another week with an undisclosed injury. The Dolphins’ only other safeties are Jordan Colbert (a practice squad player last season) and undrafted rookie John Saunders Jr.
The Dolphins signed Davis as a free agent during the offseason. He spent his first five seasons with the Jets, starting 22 of 69 career appearances and pulling in eight interceptions.
