Colts apologize for ‘insensitive’ schedule release video that poked fun at Tyreek Hill’s detainment
Well, someone might get fired.
In the aftermath of a social media firestorm surrounding the Indianapolis Colts’ schedule release video, the team has issued an apology to Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill after they parodied his arrest.
“We removed our schedule release video because it exceeded our rights with Microsoft & included an insensitive clip involving Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill,” the Colts wrote in a statement, per 33rd Team reporter Ari Meirov. The video took place in a world inspired by Minecraft, a popular video game that Microsoft purchased in 2014. “We sincerely apologize to Microsoft and Tyreek.”
The video began with a U.S. Coast Guard member essentially pulling over a Dolphin dressed in Hill’s jersey, seemingly poking fun at the superstar’s detainment by Miami-Dade police prior to the 2024 season home opener.
Despite the outrage surrounding the Colts video, Hill apparently got a laugh or two out of it.
“Should’ve left it up @Colts,” Hill tweeted late Thursday morning, “this was funny.”
Video footage of the Sept. 8 incident showed Hill being dragged out of his vehicle, handcuffed and pinned to the ground just outside Hard Rock Stadium. The incident, which quickly went viral on social media, was decried as racial profiling.
“What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?” the star wideout said after the altercation. “Lord knows what those guys would have did.”
Although Hill initially received two tickets for careless driving and not wearing a seat belt, they were dismissed after the officer who cited him didn’t show up to the Miami-Dade traffic hearing.
NFL schedule release videos have become all the rage as of late. In attempt to draw up intrigue for the upcoming season, teams flex their creativity in order to have the most memorable moment. The Dolphins, for example, had Pro Football Hall of Famer Zach Thomas narrate its release video.
“I love it,” Brewer said of the release videos prior to the Colts’ faux pas. “They get to showcase their talent. This is what they do, this is what they love and that’s their passion. It’s always cool when they can cook up something special to show the guys, entertain everybody and get us going.”
And while everyone tends to enjoy the release videos, the internet scrutiny surrounding the Colts might cause teams to think twice in the future.
