The Miami Dolphins before the season gave Tua Tagovailoa the largest contract in franchise history — a four-year, $212.4 million extension that formally kicks in next season.

The decision came after Tagovailoa had the best season of his young career — he led the NFL with 4,624, becoming the first Dolphins player to do so since Dan Marino did it in 1992, and threw for 29 touchdowns while playing in every game for the first time in his career.

Since then? Tagovailoa played in just 11 games this season. He missed four games due to his latest concussion and was sidelined for Miami’s 20-3 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday due to a hip injury that very likely will keep him out of the Dolphins’ regular-season finale against the New York Jets — a game Miami needs to win in order to have a chance to make the playoffs.

It begs the question: Did the Dolphins make the right move giving Tua Tagovailoa his contract extension ahead of the season when they could have had him play out the fifth-year option of his rookie contract before deciding to invest in him long-term?
