The Dolphins are hiring former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry to be their linebackers coach/run game coordinator, a league source told the Miami Herald, the first major addition to new coordinator Anthony Weaver’s staff.

Anthony Campanile, who spent the last four seasons as the Dolphins’ linebackers coach, will not be returning to the staff after his contract expired, a source said. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are hiring Campanile as their linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

Campanile interviewed for the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator job in each of the last two years and also interviewed for the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator vacancy; New York hired former Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen.

Barry, 53, spent the last three seasons as the Packers’ defensive coordinator and was fired on Jan. 24. In 2023, Green Bay finished 10th in points allowed and 17th in yards allowed. Throughout his tenure, the Packers were 12th in points allowed and yards allowed.

A Colorado native who played college football at Michigan and USC, Barry will coach on the college or pro level for the 30th year in the 2024 season. He has coached linebackers in stints with Northern Arizona, UNLV and USC, as well as with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then-San Diego Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. Barry also served as the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions (2007 to 2008) and Washington (2015-2016). He was a part of the coaching staff for Super Bowl-winning teams in Tampa and Los Angeles.

Weaver, who was hired as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator on Saturday, will also have to add a new safeties coach with Joe Kasper reportedly leaving to join Vic Fangio’s staff with the Philadelphia Eagles in the same role.

NFL Network first reported the Dolphins are hiring Barry.

Dolphins won’t play in Brazil in 2024

Despite speculation that the Dolphins could play in the first NFL game in Brazil in 2024, the team will not be heading to the South American country this upcoming season.

The NFL on Monday announced that the Philadelphia Eagles have been selected as the designated team to play in Brazil. The game will be played at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, on Friday, Sept. 6, the first time the NFL has played a game on Friday night of their opening weekend in over 50 years.

The Eagles’ opponent has not been announced yet but the Dolphins are not scheduled to play the Eagles in the 2024 season. Miami was viewed as a possible team to play in Brazil, as the Dolphins are the only NFL team with international marketing rights in Brazil.

The Dolphins will not play overseas in 2024, as they are not scheduled to face any of the other teams – Chicago Bears (London), Minnesota Vikings (London), Jacksonville Jaguars (London) and Carolina Panthers (Munich) – that have been announced as designated teams for the league’s International Series.

Miami played overseas in the 2023 season. The Dolphins faced the Kansas City Chiefs in the league’s first regular season game in Frankfurt, Germany, losing 21-14.
