Dolphins streamline play-calling in loss to Buccaneers. Work flow ‘no different’ for Brissett

The Miami Dolphins still haven’t explicitly stated who between co-offensive coordinators George Godsey and Eric Studesville is calling plays, but a little bit of clarity might have surfaced in their 45-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Godsey called the plays directly to quarterback Jacoby Brissett on Sunday, a revelation revealed on the CBS broadcast.

Previously this season, quarterbacks coach Charlie Frye has served as the middleman between the coordinators and the quarterback in relaying the plays.

“It was no different,” Brissett said. “The only thing was it was George on the head set. That was about it. It was the same type of communication that we’ve had all year.”

Coach Brian Flores said the decision was made “earlier in the week.”

The main benefit: Time.

“I thought that we felt like [we could use] the couple extra seconds,” Flores said. “A couple of shifts and motions, things like that. There was more time.”

Brissett completed 27 of 39 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on Sunday, his third game as the starter with Tua Tagovailoa sidelined.

Brissett briefly left the sideline on a cart in the first quarter with what was listed as a hamstring injury but he did not miss an offensive snap.

“I just had to go into the locker room and then came back out,” Brissett said, adding that there was “not a chance” that he was going to miss playing time.

He has the respect of his teammates.

“That’s our guy,” offensive lineman Austin Jackson said. “I think he did a great job leading us. Just preparation all week. He sits down with the o-line and we go through those extra hours of film without the coaches to make sure we pick up stunts right and I think he a great job just being himself.”

Added tight end Mike Gesicki: “He’s done a phenomenal job just being tough back there, keeping plays alive with his feet, getting knocked down and getting back up and being a leader and a fighter for us.”

Tagovailoa could potentially return next week for the Dolphins’ game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

When asked how that changes things for him, Brissett responded: “That’s not my call.”
