Federal indictments filed in early October, accusing 32 people of a multi-million dollar gambling ring, is what led to Miami Heat’s veteran guard Terry Rozier being handcuffed and kicked out of the NBA. The bombshell documents unveiled Thursday reveal a tangled web of conspiracy that involves past and present NBA players, illegal sports betting and notorious Mafia families.
On Oct. 9, the two wire-fraud conspiracy indictments filed in the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York charged Rozier, former Miami Heat player Damon Jones and Portland Trail Blazers Head Coach Chauncey Billups.
Also charged: several members of prominent New York crime families. The illicit, years-long gambling scheme, per the Feds, involved the culprits trading non-public information only known in NBA circles to rake in millions of dollars.
