Marlins rally for walk-off win to snap franchise-record losing streak
The longest losing streak in Miami Marlins history is over.
And they snapped it in perhaps the most dramatic way possible.
Griffin Conine hit a walk-off single as the Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 on Monday at loanDepot park.
The win snapped Miami’s 12-game losing streak, a run of futility that began on July 10. Miami improves to 53-54 on the season. Philadelphia falls to 57-50.
The ninth-inning heroics began with Jakob Marsee and Otto Lopez hitting back-to-back singles before Kyle Stowers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Esteury Ruiz pinch-ran for Stowers. Heriberto Hernandez, who homered earlier in the game, then hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the game. Xavier Edwards hit a bunt single to load the bases again and set up Conine’s single.
It undid a rough night from the Marlins’ bullpen, which gave up five runs to turn an early 5-2 Marlins lead into a 7-5 deficit.
Hernandez and Conine each hit home runs off Zack Wheeler as part of that early scoring barrage, which also saw Marsee hit an RBI double and Lopez an RBI triple.
Tyler Phillips held the Phillies to two runs — all on a Bryce Harper first-inning home run — over five innings while Miami’s offense built the lead.
Cade Gibson and Tyler Zuber then gave up four runs in the sixth inning and John King another in the eighth before Miami put together that ninth-inning rally to end the losing streak.
Injury updates
Right-handed relief pitcher Michael Petersen was not available to pitch Monday after taking a pitch to his right forearm on Sunday. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said he is day to day.
Outfielder Owen Caissie is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple A Jacksonville on Tuesday. He will join reliever Josh Ekness on the rehab circuit.
