The Miami Marlins have their first injury of spring training.

Right-handed pitcher Janson Junk, who started 16 games and pitched 110 innings for Miami last season, rolled his right ankle on Tuesday and was wearing a walking boot after the team’s workout at the Marlins Jupiter Academy.

Junk said the injury occurred while he was warming up and that he and the team are taking the “safe, precautionary route” with it being so early in camp — Miami’s season opener against the Colorado Rockies on March 27 is still five-and-a-half weeks away.

“Initial testing looked good,” Junk said from his locker in the Marlins’ clubhouse, adding that he didn’t have any swelling. “Just a little rolled ankle, but we’re gonna go through all the steps to just make sure it’s all good. I’m not sure exactly what they’re gonna do. They’re gonna have a doctor look at it and just kind of go from there. I’m not sure about what his plans would be. Whatever he recommends.”

Junk said his foot got caught while warming up, which prompted the rolled ankle.

He said it’s probably the first time in the last 10 years that he has rolled his ankle.

“It’s just annoying, building up and everything,” Junk said. “I was feeling really good.”

Junk entered camp as a contender for a roster spot, either in the back end of the rotation or as a swingman/long reliever out of the bullpen. The latter is the most likely avenue now following the signing of veteran right-handed starting pitcher Chris Paddack to add to a rotation that will also likely feature Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Max Meyer and Braxton Garrett.

Junk went 6-4 with a 4.17 ERA over his 21 total appearances (16 starts) for Miami in 2025, his first season with the organization.
