Dolphins’ Dan Marino to throw out Miami Marlins Opening Day first pitch
Miami Dolphins legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino will throw out the first pitch at the Miami Marlins’ Opening Day on March 27 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at loanDepot park, the team announced Saturday.
Marino, 53, is a Pittsburgh native and went to the University of Pittsburgh before being picked 27th overall by the Dolphins in the 1983 NFL Draft and spending his entire 17-year career with the team. He has since rejoined the Dolphins as a special advisor, a role he has had since 2014.
“I’m honored by the invitation to throw the ceremonial first pitch for the Miami Marlins on Opening Day,” Marino said in a press release announcing the news. “It will be very special for me to return to the site of many memories and where the community made it home for me. Being back for this special moment, surrounded by the great fans of South Florida.”
The Marlins are pegging the season opener as “Opening Dade,” with what they say will include “an only-in-Miami lineup of festivities.” The game between the Marlins and Pirates is scheduled for a 4:10 p.m. start.
“Opening Day is always such a special celebration that brings our community and organization together, and we are thrilled to have a South Florida sports legend join us in taking the occasion to another level as only our city can do,” Marlins president of business Caroline O’Connor said in a press release. “We can’t wait to welcome our fans back for another exciting season of Marlins Baseball at loanDepot park. There are some additional surprises in the works that will make the day even more memorable, so be sure to stay tuned for updates.”
