Miami Marlins’ starting pitching depth takes a hit before the season begins
The Miami Marlins’ starting rotation for the next season has already taken a hit.
Left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett will miss the 2025 season after having left elbow UCL revision surgery with an internal brace in December.
Garrett, 27, spent most of last season dealing with injury. He entered spring training with general shoulder soreness and started the season on the injured list with a left shoulder impingement.
He made just seven starts upon his return, pitching to a 5.35 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 37 innings, before being sidelined for the rest of the season with a left forearm flexor strain.
This came after a breakout 2023 campaign in which he made 31 appearances (30 starts), throwing a career-high 159 2/3 innings and pitching to a 3.66 ERA. He started Game 2 of the Marlins’ wild card series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
With Garrett out, the Marlins have eight healthy starting pitchers on their 40-man roster: righties Sandy Alcantara, Edward Cabrera, Max Meyer, Valente Bellozo, Xzavion Curry and Adam Mazur (their No. 12 prospect per MLB Pipeline) in addition to lefties Ryan Weathers and Dax Fulton (their No. 28 prospect).
Eury Perez, who is still recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent last season, is projected to be back around the All-Star Break.
