Miami Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. exits game vs Texas Rangers with hamstring cramp

Center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. left the Miami Marlins’ 9-8 loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday in the third inning with what was initially ruled a right hamstring cramp.

Chisholm said he felt the cramp while trying to steal base in the top of the third inning. He was tagged out the last out of the frame. Prior to the stolen base attempt, Chisholm legged out an infield RBI single to cap a three-run rally for the Marlins.

“It wasn’t really a big issue,” Chisholm said of the cramp. “I was about to go back out, but [Marlins manager] Skip [Schumaker] told me to take it easy. We were up ... at that point. No need to go out there and try to be Superman like I always try to do.”

Chisholm said he hopes to be back in the lineup on Sunday.

However, it’s worth remembering Chisholm has already been on the injured list twice this season, missing 60 of 66 games from May 14 to July 30 first with turf toe and then with a left oblique strain. He returned from the turf toe injury on June 27 after a 39-game absence and played six consecutive games before the oblique injury sidelined him for another 29 games. Chisholm returned to the active roster again on Monday and played in five of Miami’s seven games since his return.

“It’s very upsetting,” Chisholm said of the recurring injuries, “especially after coming out, we lost the game. ... It kind of makes you feel like it’s your fault in a way because every time I get hurt, it’s just something happens. It sucks a lot.”

Has Chisholm been doing anything different with his pregame routine to try to minimize injuries?

“I’m with the trainers every day,” Chisholm said. “I get a massage every day. I’m in the weight room every day. I’ve got to get my body ready for every game. Things just keep happening. Hopefully, one day I just turn into Superman and don’t get hurt anymore.

He continued: “In the minor leagues, I was rarely hurt and I barely did anything in the clubhouse, just went out there for stretch and played the game, but now I’m stretching all the time; I’m trying to make sure my body’s ready for every game and I’m still getting hurt even though some of them are freak accidents. ... I’m trying to be as healthy as I can.”

On the season, Chisholm is hitting .253 with 10 home runs, 24 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 50 games played.
