Roosters running around loanDepot park? Mascot race returns to Marlins home games
A mascot race is returning to loanDepot park.
After putting an end to the Great Sea Race prior to the 2018 season and going the past four-and-a-half years without a mid-game character race of any sort at the ballpark, the Miami Marlins announced Sunday that a new mascot race will come to life at home games starting on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Behold: The Rooster Race.
The three contestants each night, each wearing one of the Marlins’ home uniforms — the traditional white, throwback teal and City Connect Sugar King red.
The Marlins made the announcement and introduced the three roosters during Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Tigers, which coincided with a birthday party for Billy the Marlin, the team’s mascot.
“I have a new crew joining me this time around,” Billy the Marlin said in a press release given out by the club on Sunday, “with some of the wildest and zaniest characters from all over South Florida.”
The press release ended with the hashtag #MascotsAreAthletesToo.
Now the Marlins aren’t the first or the only team to have mid-game mascot or character races.
The Milwaukee Brewers have racing sausages. The Washington Nationals have the Racing Presidents. The Atlanta Braves have the tools race and “Beat the Freeze.” The Texas Rangers have the Dot Race. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the Great Pierogi Race.
And now, the Marlins and their roosters have gotten themselves back into the mid-game race conversation.
