Marlins prospect Victor Victor Mesa leaves Triple A Jacksonville team, placed on restricted list
Miami Marlins outfielder prospect Victor Victor Mesa has been placed on the restricted list and his future with the club remains unclear.
Mesa, 26, left the Triple A Jacksonville team last month after the team bus arrived in Gwinnett, Georgia, for a series against the Gwinnett Stripers, the Triple A affiliate for the Atlanta Braves. He has been away from the team since, a source told the Miami Herald.
He has sparingly played this season, appearing in just 13 games, one with Double A Pensacola and 12 with Triple A Jacksonville. Mesa has .189 (7 for 37) with one home run, five RBI and six runs scored. Mesa last appeared in a game on June 16, three days before the team departed for Gwinnett.
The Marlins signed Mesa and his younger brother, Victor Mesa Jr., in October 2018 as the first major splash under the new ownership group. Victor Victor Mesa, 22 at the time, was given a $5.25 million signing bonus. Victor Mesa Jr., then 17, received just under $1 million.
Victor Victor Mesa, while defensively gifted, has struggled offensively since being his career state-side. He has a career .233 batting average over 290 career games.
His younger brother, however, has grown to be one of Miami’s top prospects. Mesa Jr. is the No. 13 overall prospect in the Marlins’ system, according to MLB Pipeline. He’s hitting .243 this season with Double A Pensacola to go along with seven home runs, 16 doubles, 41 RBI and 39 runs scored in 70 games.
