Jesus Luzardo falters early as Miami Marlins drop series opener to Seattle Mariners
Jesus Luzardo lasted a season-low four innings and put the Miami Marlins in an early hole they couldn’t recover from in an 8-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Monday at T-Mobile Park.
Miami falls to 37-30. Seattle moves to 32-33.
Luzardo gave up six runs (five earned) in his first two innings against the Mariners before holding Seattle scoreless during his final two innings. The six runs are tied for the most he has allowed this season with his outing on May 21 at the San Francisco Giants. It was also the first time he didn’t make it through at least five innings since April 23 and the first time any Marlins starter failed to go more than four innings since Edward Cabrera on May 10 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Seattle opened scoring with a Teoscar Hernandez RBI double in the first inning and then doubled the score when Bryan De La Cruz dropped Eugenio Suarez’s fly ball to left field to allow Hernandez to score. The Mariners entered Monday having scored just 29 runs in the first inning (the lowest among all MLB teams), while Marlins pitching had held opponents to 16 first-inning runs (the best in MLB).
The real damage, however, came in the second inning, when Luzardo gave up an RBI single to Julio Rodriguez and a three-run home run to Ty France to put Miami down 6-0.
All six of Seattle’s runs against Luzardo came with two outs. Five of the six hits came against Luzardo’s slider.
The Mariners added two more runs on solo home runs by Suarez in the fifth against Huascar Brazoban and Tom Murphy in the eighth against Bryan Hoeing.
The Marlins scored their lone run on a Nick Fortes home run in the fifth inning. Other than that, Mariners starting pitcher Bryce Miller held the Miami offense to just three walks during his six innings.
Luis Arraez batting average update
Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez went 0 for 4 on Monday, dropping his batting average to .391.
It was just the ninth time this season Arraez went without a hit in a start and the first time since June 2.
