Miami Marlins once again can’t figure out Zac Gallen in loss to Arizona Diamondbacks
Maybe some day, the Miami Marlins will figure out Zac Gallen.
Monday was not that day.
Just like he did the first two times he faced the Marlins since they traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2019 to acquire Jazz Chisholm Jr., Gallen held his former team at bay as he pitched seven strong innings.
The Marlins lost 5-2 at Chase Field to begin the three-game series against the Diamondbacks. Miami is now 17-19 and has lost six of its past seven games. The Diamondbacks move to 20-15.
Gallen held the Marlins to just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven.
The only run Miami scored on him came on Jesus Sanchez’s second double of the game, which scored Nick Fortes from first base to tie the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning.
Gallen retired eight of the final 10 batters he faced after that before turning the game over to the Diamondbacks’ bullpen for the final two innings.
Garrett Hampson’s pinch-hit two-out RBI double in the ninth got Miami within three runs but no closer.
In three career starts against the Marlins, Gallen has a 1.35 ERA (three earned runs over 20 innings) with 19 strikeouts against just one walk. He held Miami scoreless over 6 2/3 innings in his April 16 start at loanDepot park.
The Diamondbacks scored three runs in the sixth, chasing left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett mid-frame, to pull ahead for good. They added an insurance run in the seventh against reliever Chi Chi Gonzalez.
Segura ejected
Third baseman Jean Segura was ejected in the sixth inning after an inning-ending strikeout looking that stranded two runners. After home plate umpire Mark Ripperger called the third strike, Segura slammed his helmet to the ground and argued the call.
Segura went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts on Monday and is hitting just .186 with 22 strikeouts through his first 33 games since signing a two-year deal with the Marlins this offseason.
