Podcast: What Marlins need to keep doing in July, All-Star Game and World Baseball Classic
The Miami Marlins did what they needed to do last week, splitting a two-game set with the Los Angeles Angels at home and then taking two of four games against the National League East-leading New York Mets on the road.
They did not, however, carry that momentum into the opening game of their final homestand before the All-Star Break when they lost 5-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday at loanDepot park.
For the Marlins’ sake, they need to hope that first game against Pittsburgh was just a blip.
They can’t afford too many unnecessary losses if they want to keep their spot as playoff hopefuls.
Miami remains four games out of the final wild card spot and needs to pick up as much ground as it can this month with a July schedule that includes two more marquee division matchups and is filled with sub-.500 teams otherwise.
Miami Herald Marlins beat writer Jordan McPherson and deputy sports editor Andre Fernandez break down the Marlins’ path on the latest episode of Fish Bytes. The two also look ahead to the upcoming All-Star Game festivities, with starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. representing the Marlins in Los Angeles and right-handed pitcher prospect Eury Perez tabbed to play in the Futures Game. They wrap up the show with World Baseball Classic talk.
