Miami Marlins’ starting pitching takes another hit. The latest injury news
The injuries keep coming to the Miami Marlins’ starting pitching.
The latest to get sidelined, ahead of the Marlins’ series finale with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday: Right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera, who the Marlins placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow tendonitis.
This is Cabrera’s second injury of the season. He was sidelined in April due to right biceps muscle fatigue and didn’t make his 2022 minor-league debut until April 27, about three weeks into the minor-league season.
The 24-year-old righty has a 3.45 ERA through three MLB starts, with the majority of the damage against him coming in his most recent start on Sunday against the Houston Astros. He gave up five earned runs on five hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings that day after giving up just one run over 12 innings through his first two starts with the Marlins.
“I wasn’t feeling comfortable,” Cabrera said after the start.
Miami’s starting pitching depth was already pretty thin before the Cabrera news.
Jesus Luzardo has been on the injured list since May 12 with a left forearm strain. He just began throwing from 60 feet and was transferred to the 60-day IL, making the earliest possible day he can be activated is July 11, a week before the All-Star Break.
Cody Poteet, who initially replaced Luzardo in the rotation, is also on the IL with a right elbow injury. Like Luzardo, he just began playing catch.
And Pablo Lopez was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday while dealing with swelling in his right wrist after being hit by a line drive in his start on Friday. Lopez threw bullpen sessions on Monday and Wednesday, and the Marlins are hopeful he will be able to start at some point during their four-game series against the New York Mets to cap this 10-game, three-city road trip.
They very well might need him to, considering their other options.
Miami’s rotation at this point is Sandy Alcantara, Lopez, Trevor Rogers, Braxton Garrett and Daniel Castano (who was added to the active roster Wednesday to start in Lopez’s place).
Several of their top minor-league options left — headlined by Max Meyer (right ulnar nerve irritation), Jordan Holloway and Sixto Sanchez — are injured.
Elieser Hernandez, who was optioned to Triple A after giving up 18 home runs in 48 innings over 11 appearances, is the only healthy starting pitcher on the 40-man roster not currently with the Marlins. Nick Neidert is another option in Triple A, but Miami has been converting him to a reliever although he started his last two outings with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in that span.
As for the rest of the Marlins’ roster moves on Wednesday: Cole Sulser was placed on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain and right-handed pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis had his contract selected.
