Miami Marlins first baseman Garrett Cooper was removed from Sunday’s series finale against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Cooper was diagnosed with a left wrist contusion and X-rays were negative, according to the Marlins.

“Happy it was only a bruise,” said Cooper, who added he doesn’t anticipate he will miss much playing time if any at all as the Marlins continue their season-opening road trip with two games against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday and Tuesday.

Miguel Rojas, who was not in the starting lineup Sunday, replaced Cooper at first base starting in the bottom half of the inning. Jesus Aguilar, Miami’s other first baseman, was already in the lineup as the designated hitter.

Anthony DeSclafani’s 92.8 mph sinker on a 2-1 count ran inside and hit Cooper on his wrist. Cooper squatted down in the batter’s box after getting plunked and threw his bat in frustration before walking to first base with a trainer and manager Don Mattingly by his side. He stayed on the basepaths but was removed from the game the next half inning.

Cooper, who has hit second in Miami’s lineup in every game against the Giants, is 3 for 11 with one RBI (on the hit by pitch).

Injuries have been an issue for Cooper since joining the Marlins ahead of the 2018 season. He has never played more than 107 games in a season. He has had seven injured list stints over the past four seasons: Twice in 2018 with right wrist injuries that eventually required surgery; a left calf strain and left hand contusion in 2019; a bout with COVID-19 in 2020; and a lumbar strain and a UCL tear in his left elbow in 2021, the latter of which required surgery.

“Luck’s been a little on the bad side during my career here,” Cooper said.
