Miami Marlins make first post-lockout signing with spring training on the horizon
The Miami Marlins have made their first transaction since MLB lockout was lifted.
The Marlins have signed outfielder Roman Quinn to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training, a source confirmed to the Miami Herald on Saturday.
Quinn, 28, had spent the entirety of his career to this point with the Philadelphia Phillies, who drafted him in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut in 2016 and has 178 career big-league games under his belt.
In that time, Quinn has a .228 batting average and .661 on base plus slugging percentage with 18 doubles, eight triples, eight home runs, 38 RBI, 63 runs scored and 39 stolen bases on 47 attempts.
His offensive numbers, however, have dipped the past few years. He hit .213 in 85 combined games in the 2019 and 2020 seasons and just .173 in 28 games in the 2021 season.
Quinn’s signing provides the Marlins with outfielder depth, a position where they are trying to make one more acquisition to round out an MLB roster that, if all remains the same, will most likely include Avisail Garcia, Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz on the Opening Day roster. Miami also has prospects JJ Bleday and Peyton Burdick expected to start the season at Triple A Jacksonville.
Players on the 40-man roster are expected to report at spring training no later than Sunday. The Marlins’ first full-squad workout is slated for Monday, with Grapefruit League games beginning Friday against the Washington Nationals.
