Miami Marlins name managers for minor-league affiliates. What to know about each
The Miami Marlins on Thursday named the managers for their six minor-league affiliates for the 2022 season. Two are holding onto their same role from last season. Some are familiar faces. Three are moving into new roles, including one getting his first taste of managerial experience. And one is new to the organization.
The six: Daren Brown (Triple A Jacksonville), Kevin Randel (Double A Pensacola), Jorge Hernandez (Class A Advanced Beloit), Angel Espada (Class A Jupiter), Luis Dorante Sr. (Florida Complex League) and Nelson Prada (Dominican Summer League).
Brown is the only one of the six who was not previously part of the Marlins organization, but he has more than 20 years of managerial experience — including a 50-game stint as the interim manager of the Seattle Mariners in 2010. He was most recently the inaugural manager for the Kingsport Axmen, who were named the 2021 Appalachian League Organization of the Year. He is 1,260-1,256 all-time as a minor league manager.
Randel and Dorante are the two that remain in the same position they held in 2021. Randel is in his seventh season as a manager for a Marlins minor-league affiliate, including his third consecutive season at the Double A level. Dorante, in his secont stint with the Marlins after being part of the organization from 2002-07, is managing the Florida Complex League for a second consecutive season.
As for the other three:
▪ Hernandez moves up to manage Class A Advanced Beloit after serving as the Jupiter Hammerheads manager last season. This is Hernandez’s 16th year with the Marlins organization. He was the Marlins’ minor league infield coordinator for five seasons prior to moving into a managerial role in 2021.
▪ Espada is in his his 14th season with the Marlins organization. He spent the last two seasons as the organization’s Latin America field coordinator for the Marlins organization. Espada has six seasons of managerial experience: Five years at the Class A level and one at the Dominican Summer League.
▪ Prada is in his second season with the Marlins. He was the hitting coach for the DSL Marlins last year.
