Podcast: Playoff-contending Marlins buy for the present and future at trade deadline
It has been awhile since the Miami Marlins found themselves in this position. Contending for the playoffs. Making moves that benefit the present instead of solely thinking about the future.
And yet here they stood at the trade deadline of this shortened 2020 season, sitting with a .500 record that would have them postseason bound.
Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill wasn’t going to pass up this chance.
The end result: Two trades Monday, one focused on the present, one on the future.
The Marlins acquired the top position player available in Diamondbacks outfielder Starling Marte in exchange for Caleb Smith, Humberto Mejia and Julio Frias (officially listed as a player to be named later) and traded free-agent-to-be Jonathan Villar to the Blue Jays for another top prospect in outfielder Griffin Conine (son of Mr. Marlin Jeff Conine).
In the latest episode of Fish Bytes, Jordan McPherson and Andre Fernandez break down the trades and what they mean for the Marlins in the short- and long-term as well as take a look at the Marlins’ season to this point now that they’ve reached the halfway point.
