The Marlins-Mets series in Puerto Rico canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic
The delay of the 2020 Major League Baseball season due to the growing coronavirus pandemic had another direct hit on the Miami Marlins.
MLB announced Thursday that the Marlins’ scheduled three-game series against the New York Mets on April 28-30 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has been canceled. Should the series be rescheduled, it will take place at Marlins Park because it was tabbed as a Marlins home series.
This marks the second consecutive occasion that a scheduled Marlins series in Puerto Rico was called off. The Marlins last attempted to play in Puerto Rico during the 2016 season but that was squashed due to concerns about the Zika virus. The two-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 30-31 of that season was instead moved to Marlins Park.
MLB also announced that the Mexico City series scheduled for April 18 and 19 between the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks will also not take place.
The league initially suspended spring training games on March 12 and postponed the start of the regular season at least two weeks.
However, it’s now looking like mid-May would be the earliest baseball activities can resume following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation on Sunday to cancel or postpone mass gatherings for the next eight weeks. That recommendation goes until May 11.
