Miami Marlins make first wave of spring training roster cuts. Plus Opening Day details

The first round of spring training cuts have come for the Miami Marlins, and all of them are about what one would expect.

The majority of the moves are starting pitchers who were scheduled to begin the season in the minor-leagues.

The full group:

Jorge Guzman and Sixto Sanchez were optioned to Triple A Wichita.

Edward Cabrera and Jordan Holloway were optioned to Double A Jacksonville.

Humberto Mejia was optioned to Class A Advanced Jupiter.

Five additional players who are not on the 40-man roster were also sent to minor-league camp, which began Friday: pitchers Daniel Castano, Braxton Garrett and Trevor Rogers; catcher BJ Lopez; and outfielder Victor Victor Mesa.

Seven of these 10 players are among the Marlins’ top-30 prospects according to MLBPipeline. Sanchez is No. 1, Cabrera is No. 5, Garrett is No. 6, Rogers is No. 8, Guzman is No. 19, Holloway is No. 20 and Mejia is No. 23.

“It’s been fun to watch. It honestly has,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “You know a lot about those guys because you’re reading reports last year and I know a lot of the development side is really excited about them for good reason. It was good to see them work, interact and take that next step toward being in the big leagues.”

Opening Day details

The Marlins’ 2020 season opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on March 26 will be here before you know it.

If you plan to go, the Marlins have a slew of festivities scheduled ahead of the game’s 4:10 p.m. first pitch as well as after the game concludes.

Among them:

On-field Opening Day ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m.

The first 25,000 fans will receive a Rally Towel presented by Ocean Bank and a Marlins 2020 magnetic schedule, presented by UHealth.

The postgame grand opening of the new Biscayne Bay Brew Hall, which will feature live music and a signature Miami Marlins beer.

The Marlins also announced earlier this week that parking will be $5 cheaper than last season and the parking garages and lots around the ballpark will have a free-flow parking system.
