Podcast: The Marlins’ series win over the Phillies all but sets stage for a playoff return
It’s getting closer and closer to becoming official. Barring a major collapse during these final 15 games, the Miami Marlins will be heading to the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
Their performance over the first half of this final homestand — winning five games in seven days against the Philadelphia Phillies to move into second place in the National League East — was a big reason why. What they do over the rest of the homestand (eight games against sub. 500 teams) will most likely determine if the Marlins’ four-games series in Atlanta next week turns into a head-to-head battle to win the NL East.
The mainstays from the start of the rebuild are contributing. The veteran acquisitions (both from this offseason and the trade deadline) are contributing. The top prospects who likely wouldn’t be playing here this season are contributing.
In the latest episode of Fish Bytes, the Miami Herald’s weekly Miami Marlins podcast, Jordan McPherson and Andre Fernandez break down the seven-game Marlins-Phillies, what impressed them the most about this Marlins team over the homestretch of a 60-game regular season, what’s ahead over these final 13 days before the playoffs begin and the importance of this moment for the rebuild and why it needs to last beyond the 2020 season.
