Titletown South Florida

Titletown South Florida: State title sweep and a preview of the early signing period

South Florida teams maximized their state championship allotment once again, winning all four possible titles over what was an interesting, intense and thrilling weekend at Fort Lauderdale.

While locally things went well for Miami Central, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas and Miami Columbus, they went downhill for Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna in their national bowl clash with Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.

Several of the most talented athletes on those and other teams around the area will next look to the future with the early signing period beginning on Wednesday.

Titletown South Florida caps its first season by taking a look at the best of the best from state championship weekend and look at some of the remaining unanswered questions heading into Wednesday’s events.

Miami Herald Deputy Sports Editor Andre Fernandez and Sportswriter David Wilson dive into that and more in our 15th episode.

We’ll look at Columbus’ overtime win over Apopka and what “special” play the Explorers used to win their second state title in four seasons.

David and Andre break down the highly-anticipated matchup between Miami Central and American Heritage, how the Rockets prevailed and the major recruiting news involving the stars from each side - Central’s Rueben Bain and American Heritage’s Mark Fletcher. Looks like they’re going to be teammates starting next year.

We’ll also look at what’s next for the Aquinas dynasty after four consecutive state titles and championship No. 14.

Homestead got so close. Will the Broncos break up? Or does the beat go on under new coach Ronnie Thornton?

And who else should people keep an eye on as far as college choices this weekend. It doesn’t look like the Miami Hurricanes are done, and probably not their rival Florida State either.
