Poll: Which Broward high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Dec. 18)

The football season came to a thrilling conclusion with South Florida sweeping the four classifications in which they had teams participating. The winter sports season looks like it could have more championships in store in the coming months.

This week, we continue a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Miami-Dade County high school sports.

Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Dec. 22, around 10 p.m.

You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:

Keyshawn Johnson, St. Thomas Aquinas, football: Johnson had four sacks and five tackles for loss to lead the Raiders’ defense in a 38-21 win over Homestead that secured them their 14th state championship.

Juan Otero, American Heritage, boys’ soccer: Otero scored two goals each in wins over Naples and Monarch.

Gabriela Gomez, Pine Crest, girls’ weightlifting: Gomez won the 129 weight class in the Traditional & Olympic categories, while securing a personal best at 105 pounds in the Clean&Jerk. She earned Top Overall Lifter honors in Traditional and Olympic categories.

Jamai Tejada, Somerset Academy, boys’ basketball: Tejada scored 28 points and had six assists and four steals in a win over West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman.

Grace Dykstra, Stoneman Douglas, girls’ soccer: Dykstra scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Pembroke Pines Charter and then had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win over West Broward.
