Lely forces late fumble, tops Miami Jackson

Lely linebacker Kendall Duckworth jumped a Miami Jackson snap late in the fourth quarter, forcing and recovering a fumble in the Miami Jackson end zone to secure the 28-25 victory in the first round of the 5A playoffs.

Jackson took possession of the ball with about 10 minutes remaining after Lely’s Tre’Vaughn Young fumbled at the goal line.

But Duckworth’s play ended Jackson’s season.

“Coming from Dade County, it’s going to be tough to play anybody,” Jackson coach Earl Little said. “I knew that. I told my kids that it’s going to be tough over here.”

Jackson quarterback Desmond Phillips passed for 180 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns, and had a 46-yard touchdown reception.

But when Jackson had one final possession, down by three with three minutes remaining, the drive fell short on three incompletions.
