American’s victory Thursday night may have had its flaws.

But what mattered to the Patriots was its meaning.

While its offense could barely move the ball, American’s defense was once again stellar and led it to a 12-8 victory over Carol City at Traz Powell Stadium.

The victory capped a 9-1 regular season for the Patriots that matched its best record in school history and the first time they finished with such a mark since 1988.

“Nobody outside of our coaches believed we could do something special this season,” said American first-year coach Anthony White. “From the spring, we knew what we had, and we knew if we stayed the course we could do something special.”

The Patriots will face host Plantation in a Region 4-7A quarterfinal next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Milander Park. American has lost in the first round to Plantation each of the past two seasons and has not won a playoff game since 1997.

“This is a big accomplishment because we have a lot of coaches that played here before, and they told us how much it means,” Webster said. “This defense always takes charge, and we love the challenge.”

American’s defense has been its strength throughout the season. The Patriots have three shutouts and allowed 14 points or less in all nine of their victories this season.

Deangelo Nelms (14 sacks), sophomore Enos Lewis (88 tackles, four sacks), Webster (11 sacks), senior Darius Rolle (11 sacks) and senior Jeremiah Dinson (three interceptions) are among the unit’s leaders.

A pair of field goals by Diego Arcon preceded a fumble recovery for a touchdown by Antoine Webster that gave American a 12-0 lead. American’s defense finished with seven sacks and forced three turnovers. Karon Jackson had a key late interception and Shammond Williams also recovered a fumble. The efforts made up for an offense that picked up only two first downs, rushed for one yards and finished with 38 total yards.

“I like our defense against anybody,” White said. “Plantation has a great team, and we have to execute better on offense.”
