Behind two touchdowns apiece from a pair of seniors playing their final high school game, Varela bounced back from last week's 41-0 loss to down South Miami, 27-12, at Southridge.
“We were disappointed that we didn't even compete last week,” said Varela coach Carlos Mollinedo. “This is not magic. They came out today, and they responded. That’s all you can ask for.”
Justin Vargas and Anthony Guevara each scored twice to pace the Vipers rushing attack.
Vargas' 20-yard touchdown with 2:14 to play gave Varela (5-5, 2-3 District 15-8A) a 20-12 lead after losing a fumble on the previous possession that was returned 92 yards for a touchdown by Gabriel Marrero of South Miami (3-7, 2-3 District 14-8A). Vargas finished with 110 yards on 12 carries while Guevara ran 10 times for 84 yards.
