High school sports: Last week’s best Miami-Dade performances
TEAMS OF THE WEEK
The Ferguson cross-country teams swept the GMAC championships last week. The girls were led by Aylwyn Hernandez, who won the individual title with a time of 19:48.04, and runner-up Lauren Gavulic (20:05.05). The boys surged to the title led by Abiel Payano and Adrian Bermudez, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The TERRA boys’ and Reagan girls’ bowling teams won GMAC titles.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Deundre Pickett-White, Southwest, football: Pickett-White completed 17 of 23 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 84 yards on 14 carries to lead the Eagles to a crucial 24-13 win against Ferguson.
Da’Vante Phillips, Central, football: Phillips caught five passe for 107 yards and a touchdown to lead the Rockets to a 23-16 victory over Carol City that clinched their fifth consecutive district championship.
Kevin Sanchez, Daniel Doriscar and Steven Rodriguez, Mater Academy, football: The three backs combined for 265 yards to lead the Lions to a 28-9 win over Miami Springs that clinched the school’s first playoff berth.
Sheyanne Sullivan, Southwest, girls’ volleyball: Sullivan had 19 kills and 25 digs to lead the Eagles to a district semifinal win against Lourdes.
Sammy Ceballos, Westminster Christian, girls’ volleyball: Ceballos had 19 kills, 10 digs and 21 service points to lead the Warriors to the District 16-3A championship over Palmer Trinity.
Nick Diaz, Sunset, boys’ cross-country: Diaz won the GMAC individual championship with a time of 15:48.20.
Alexander Reid, Miami Beach, boys’ swimming and diving: Reid won the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly and helped the Hi-Tides win both the 200-free and 200-medley relays at the District 11-3A championships.
Julia Talamo, TERRA, girls’ swimming and diving: Talamo won the 100 butterfly, placed second in the 200 freestyle and led the winning 200-free relay at the District 12-3A meet.
Julio Betancourt, Columbus, boys’ golf: Betancourt shot a 69 to win the Region 8-3A individual title and secure a berth at the state meet.
Alexa Rivas, Palmetto, girls’ golf: Rivas shot a 74 to win the Region 8-3A individual title and qualify for state.
