Somerset Silver Palms softball standout Brigitte Valdera is the Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Valdera, a catcher, hit a key three-run home run to help power the Stallions back to the state final four following a 4-2 win over Coral Springs Charter.
Behind the dish, she caught 17 runners stealing with a .531 caught stealing percentage.
Somerset Silver Palms fell 4-3 in the state semifinal to Montverde Academy to finish its season 22-7-1.
Valdera for the season hit .373 with 10 doubles, four home runs, 23 RBI and five runs scored.
Doral softball’s Sarah Breaux, Northwestern girls’ track and field’s Tyra Cox, Westminster Christian baseball’s Manny Marin and Ransom Everglades boys’ track and field’s David Serra rounded out this week’s participants.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
