Results are in. Gulliver water polo standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Gulliver Prep water polo standout Alberto Escobedo is the Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Escobedo, a junior, totaled four goals and three assists in the state semifinal win over Sanford Seminole and had the game-saving deflection in the closing seconds, as well as two assists, in the state championship-clinching win over Orlando Dr. Phillips.

Escobedo finished the season with 60 goals, 38 assists and 41 steals.

Miami Springs baseball’s Ivan Membreno, Coral Reef softball’s Aubrey Alonso, Mater Academy baseball’s Jonathan Esponda and Miami High boys’ volleyball’s Jefferson Moreno rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
