Results are in. Belen cross country standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Belen Jesuit cross country standout Joshua Ruiz is the Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Ruiz, a senior, set a new Florida 5K state record with his individual win in 14:38.79 at the Southern Showcase Invitational in Huntsville, Alabama.

Belen finished in first place in the event, which featured many of the top teams in the southeastern United States.

Gulliver Prep girls’ volleyball’s Jackie Taylor, Columbus football’s Hector Chavez, Palmer Trinity girls’ golf’s Remi Bacardi, and Divine Savior boys’ golf’s Daniel Vanososte rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
