Results are in. Columbus football standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Columbus football’s Hector Chavez is the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Chavez, a sophomore linebacker, totaled 20 tackles and recovered a fumble to help Columbus rally for a 16-13 overtime victory over Apopka, securing the school’s second-ever state title.

Chavez finished the season with 74 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and four fumble recoveries.

Gulliver Prep girls’ basketball’s Mikayla Brown, Miami Central football’s Keyone Jenkins, Braddock boys’ basketball’s Oscar Sanchez and St. Brendan boys’ soccer’s Daniel Reyes rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
