Results are in. Braddock swimming standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Braddock swimmer George Gonzalez is the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Gonzalez, a sophomore, played an integral role in Braddock finishing as state runner-up as a team for the first time in school history after earning points in all four events he competed in.

He won a state title in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.25 seconds and helped the Bulldogs win the 400 freestyle relay title as well as the team’s leadoff swimmer. The relay finished in a time of 3:05.26, nearly a second-and-a-half faster than second-place Venice.

Gonzalez also took second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.92 and was part of the Bulldogs’ third-place 200 medley relay that finished less than a second behind first-place Sarasota.

More than 212,000 votes were cast in this week’s poll, with Gonzalez receiving 52 percent of the votes. St. Brendan volleyball’s Sofia Sanchez, Archbishop Carroll football’s Kenneth Pembleton, Palmetto bowling’s Evan Viener and Westminster Christian volleyball’s Gaby Arroyo rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
