Archbishop Carroll football’s Alejandro Isaza is the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Isaza, a junior, ran for 185 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries to lead the Bulldogs’ potent running game in a 50-15 victory over Westminster Christian to secure the District 8-1M championship.
Heading into Archbishop Carroll’s game against Palmer Trinity on Friday, Isaza has rushed for 937 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging 10.3 yards per carry. He has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in four of eight games and has added 140 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns on eight catches as well.
More than 44,000 votes were cast in this poll, with Isaza receiving 52 percent of the votes. Palmer Trinity girls’ volleyball’s Gabriela Butler, Columbus football’s Alberto Mendoza, Homestead football’s Joshua Townsend and Miami Central football’s Lamar Seymore rounded out this week’s participants.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
