Columbus golf standout Andres Atrio is the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.
Atrio, a senior and three-time first-team All-County golfer, shot a 3-under par 69 followed by a 2-under par 70 to lead the Explorers to a team win in the QDOBA Tournament of Champions classic — becoming the first team from Miami-Dade County to win the nine-team invitational, which included the top three team finishers from each of the FHSAA’s state championship fields last season.
Atrio has been a steady member of Columbus’ golf lineup that has reached the 16-team state final field each year of his high school career. The Explorers finished tied for sixth in 2019, eighth in 2020 and third in 2021.
Atrio’s individual finishes at state over his first three years: 43rd as a freshman, 29th as a sophomore and 36th as a junior.
District tournaments take place from Oct. 24-26, with regionals set to take place from Oct. 31-Nov. 2. The Class 3A state championship is from Nov. 8-9, Class 1A from Nov. 11-12 and Class 2A from Nov. 15-16.
More than 47,000 votes were cast in this poll, with Atrio receiving 58 percent of the votes. Ferguson girls’ volleyball standout Agatha C. Gonzalez, Westminster Christian girls’ volleyball standout Gaby Arroyo, Booker T. Washington defensive back Xavier Irvin and Belen Jesuit cross-country runner Joshua Ruiz rounded out this week’s participants.
The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
