Results are in. Braddock football standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Braddock football standout David Garcia is the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Garcia, a senior who plays quarterback on offense and free safety on defense, has been key for a Bulldogs squad that is off to a 5-1 start this season.

In Braddock’s 35-33 win over Ferguson last week, Garcia completed 15 of 23 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns, ran for another 50 yards and two touchdowns and had a 54-yard kickoff return late to set to set up his game-winning touchdown with 18 seconds remaining before also making the game-sealing interception moments later while playing free safety.

Garcia on the season has completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 767 yards and 10 touchdowns against four interceptions and ran for another eight touchdowns.

More than 68,000 votes were cast in this poll, with Garcia receiving 42 percent of the votes. True North quarterback Zac Katz, St. Brendan girls’ volleyball’s Ana Sofia Tobar and Columbus bowler Alec Padilla rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
