In the most voted on high school athlete of the week poll since the Miami Herald began the feature last spring, Divine Savior girls’ volleyball setter Thalia Iglesias was voted the Miami-Dade High School Athlete of the Week.

Iglesias, a junior, has been integral for Divine Savior’s 11-1 start to the 2022 season as the Sharks try to make a push in a loaded Class 3A.

After opening the season with a 3-0 sweep of Palmer Trinity and then three consecutive five-set wins over Carrollton, Plantation American Heritage and Ransom Everglades, Divine Savior went a perfect 5-0 in the Chaminade-Madonna Cares Volleyball Invitational with wins over West Broward, Boca Raton St. John Paul II Academy, Pine Crest, Calvary Christian and Gulliver Prep. Iglesias, who logged 14 assists, three kills, two aces and two digs in the two-set sweep of Gulliver in the championship match, was named the tournament MVP.

Divine Savior dropped its first match of the season 3-1 to St. Brendan on Sept. 13 before bouncing back with consecutive sweeps of Archbishop Carroll and Florida Christian this week.

More than 216,000 votes were cast in this poll, with Iglesias receiving 58 percent of the votes. Fellow volleyball standout Annelise Alvarez of St. Brendan came in second with 39 percent of the vote. Three football players — Goleman’s Norrie Alexander, Krop’s O’Neal Webb Jr. and Norland’s Ennio Yapoor — rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
