Doral, Gulliver claim Miami-Dade All-Sports titles. Columbus, Ransom, WC also recognized
Doral Academy and Gulliver Prep were unmatched among Miami-Dade County schools this high school athletic season, with both schools in the county bringing home multiple state titles while a slew of their other teams also made deep playoff runs.
It’s why the two are the Miami Herald’s All-Sports Awards in Miami-Dade for the 2021-2022 season.
Doral takes home the overall title for the Class 7A-6A division while also winning the Girls’ Major Sports award, which recognizes excellence across five sports: Indoor volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, and softball. Columbus won the Boys’ Major Sports award for the division based on their success in six sports: Football, basketball, soccer, baseball, track and field, and wrestling.
In the 5A-2A division, Gulliver Prep wins the overall All-Sports award, while Westminster Christian takes home the Girls’ Major Sports award and Ransom Everglades won the Boys’ Major Sports award.
Doral Academy was dominant in just about every sport this season. The Firebirds won their first-ever state title in baseball, repeated as boys’ soccer state champions and claimed a fourth consecutive girls’ tennis state title.
The success didn’t stop there. Doral also had state runner-up finishes in softball and competitive cheerleading, reached the state semifinals in girls’ volleyball, regional finals in girls’ soccer and made the regional semifinals in girls’ basketball. They also won district titles in boys’ tennis, girls’ golf and beach volleyball, with girls’ golf advancing to state. The wrestling and boys’ swimming team also had steady showings at state, finishing 17th and 14th respectively in their classifications.
The only reason Doral didn’t get a clean sweep of all three awards is because Columbus made its presence known in each of the six sports that are used to determine the Boys’ Major Sports winner.
The Explorers won their first state basketball title, finished as state runners-up in track and field, state semifinalists in football, regional finalists in baseball, regional semifinalists in soccer and had a 19th-place showing for state wrestling.
In the 5A-2A division, Gulliver Prep claimed the All-Sports title after taking home a pair of state titles in girls’ tennis and girls’ swimming.
The Raiders also had four teams make it to the regional finals (football, boys’ water polo, girls’ water polo, boys’ tennis), three teams advance to the regional semifinals (baseball, boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer) and three other teams make appearances in regional tournaments (girls’ basketball, softball and boys’ lacrosse).
For the Boys’ Major Sports winner, Ransom Everglades finished as the state runner-up for soccer in Class 3A while also going 8-1 in football as an independent, reaching the regional tournament in basketball and winning a district title in track and field.
Westminster Christian claiming the Girls’ Major Sports Award is backed by the team’s state runner-up finish in volleyball along with regional semifinal appearances by both its softball and soccer teams.
How results are determined
Each sport is given a pre-determined maximum point value, with the total amount of points a school gets for each sport being determined by their record in that sport.
For example, football has a maximum of 120 points, so a team that goes undefeated would get 120 points while a team that goes 5-5 would get 60 points.. Basketball, baseball, softball and girls’ volleyball are maxed at 100 points; swimming, golf, cross country, wrestling, track and field, and tennis are worth up to 60 points apiece; and all other FHSAA sanctioned team sports are worth up to 30 points. Teams also receive bonus points for postseason performance (winning a district title is worth 10 points and each progressive stage throughout the playoffs is worth more points).
Only schools that submitted their All-Sports ballot to the Miami Herald are included in this listing. Scores are rounded to the nearest half point.
