The results are in. Belen Jesuit soccer standout named Miami Herald Player of the Week

Belen Jesuit senior boys’ soccer standout Alejandro Pereyra is the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week, as voted on by readers in our new weekly poll introduced Monday.

Pereyra scored a combined five goals this past week in the Wolverines’ wins over Naples Golden Gate and Tampa Jesuit to advance Belen Jesuit to its second consecutive state final. Belen faces Panama City Beach Arnold at 7:05 p.m. Saturday for the Class 5A title.

More than 16,000 votes were cast in the inaugural poll. Pereyra received 56 percent of the vote. True North boys’ basketball standout J-Roc Lopez finished second with 38 percent of the vote, followed by Westminster Academy girls’ basketball’s Lena Girardi, Cypress Bay girls’ soccer’s Barbara Garcia and Miramar boys’ track and field’s Tristan Simmons.

The Miami Herald will conduct this poll weekly, with polls opening Monday morning and closing at noon Thursday.
