Blanche Ely holds off furious late rally by Cardinal Gibbons

Host Blanche Ely (4-4, 2-0) held off a late rally by Cardinal Gibbons (6-2, 0-1) for a 21-13 victory in the non-district game.

Ely led 21-0 going into the fourth quarter, but a 2-yard sneak by defensive end and University of Miami commit Richard McIntosh cut the Tigers’ lead to 21-7 with 8:56 left in the game.

The Chiefs got the ball back with 3:35 left on their own 23-yard line and got it to first-and-goal on a 73-yard pass to Leroy Henley from backup Jake Allen. Allen connected with Henley from 7 yards out for the score to cut Ely’s lead to eight.

Gibbons couldn’t complete the comeback after forcing a three-and-out after failing to recover the onside kick with 2:30 left.
